Speech therapy rooted in support, choice, and real-life communication.
Where communication grows at its own pace.
Hudson Valley Speech Therapy provides stuttering evaluations and therapy for children, teens, and adults who stutter. This is a space where stuttering is understood, not “fixed”, where communication goals are built collaboratively, and where each person is supported in speaking, participating, and showing up in ways that feel meaningful to them.
Who I Work With
Therapy may focus on communication confidence, self-advocacy, reducing avoidance, understanding stuttering, navigating school or work situations, exploring speech strategies, or simply creating a safer relationship with speaking.
-
Children who stutter deserve support that feels safe, flexible, and responsive to who they are.
Therapy with children focuses on:
Building comfort and confidence around communication
Helping children understand what stuttering is in age-appropriate ways
Reducing shame, tension, or fear surrounding speaking
Exploring communication strategies when appropriate
Supporting participation at home, school, and socially
Helping children feel heard, respected, and successful in communication
Sessions are play-based, relationship-centered, and tailored to each child’s communication style, personality, and needs.
-
The teenage years can bring increased pressure around speaking, social interactions, school participation, identity, and self-confidence. Many teens who stutter are carrying years of frustration, avoidance, exhaustion, or negative experiences around communication.
Therapy with teens may include:
Exploring the emotional and social experience of stuttering
Navigating speaking situations at school, work, or socially
Building self-advocacy skills and communication confidence
Reducing avoidance and concealment patterns
Understanding stuttering more deeply
Exploring speech tools and communication strategies collaboratively
Creating space for honest conversations about identity, anxiety, and communication
-
Many adults who stutter come to therapy carrying years of learned experiences around speaking. These experiences may include: avoidance, workplace challenges, communication fatigue, or past therapy experiences that felt discouraging or overly fluency-focused.
Therapy for adults may focus on:
Rebuilding trust and safety around communication
Exploring the impact stuttering has had over time
Understanding patterns of anticipation, avoidance, and tension
Navigating work, relationships, presentations, or everyday speaking situations
Exploring mindfulness-based supports
Increasing communication participation and self-advocacy
Defining success in a way that feels personally meaningful
Sessions are individualized and grounded in respect, honesty, and autonomy.
-
Families play an important role in a child’s communication environment, and many caregivers simply want support in understanding what stuttering is and how to respond helpfully.
Parent and caregiver support may include:
Education about what stuttering is (and what it is not)
Guidance on reducing pressure surrounding speech
Strategies for supporting communication at home
Understanding emotional responses, avoidance, and frustration
Navigating school concerns and advocacy
Creating a more supportive communication environment
The goal is helping families feel informed, supported, and empowered.
-
School-based support for stuttering can sometimes become heavily focused on observable speech behaviors alone. Hudson Valley Speech Therapy values collaboration with school teams to support a more comprehensive understanding of stuttering and communication participation.
Consultation and collaboration may include:
IEP input and goal consultation
Recommendations for classroom accommodations
Teacher education and support
Guidance around participation-based goals
Collaboration with school-based SLPs
Support in understanding the broader impact of stuttering across academic and social settings
The goal is to help create school environments where students who stutter feel supported, respected, and able to participate more fully in communication.

This brief consultation is a chance to share what you are looking for, ask questions, and talk through possible next steps. It is also a space to discuss whether a stuttering evaluation, therapy, parent consultation, or school collaboration would be most appropriate.
There is no pressure to commit to services after the consultation. The goal is simply to help you feel informed and supported as you decide what comes next.
